LA Marathon Volunteer Group!
Shout out to everyone that volunteered at the LA Marathon this past weekend!
Thank you everyone for showing out and helping the 26,000 runners that ran on Sunday.
Less than 1% of people ever run a marathon so you helped some special folks!
We also got an email about volunteering for the Rose Bowl Half Marathon next month.

Member Spotlight
Alex Pieros

What is your name? Alex Pieros
What is your hometown? Santa Cruz, CA
How long have you lived in LA? 15+ years 😳
How long have you been in Sawtelle? 5+ years 😄
What do you do for work? I'm a product manager for a healthcare tech company. I work with designers and software engineers to build the software that a clinician may use to run their practice (schedule appointments, communicate with their clients, take charting notes, bill insurance, etc.).
What is your favorite TV show/movie?
My all-time favorite show is LOST (I watched it back when it was airing on TV - nothing can compare to the experience of theorizing about it week-to-week!). My favorite movies are Shaun of the Dead, Stop Making Sense, and Knives Out
What is your favorite book? Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry 🤠
What type of music do you listen to? I'm an indie rock and punk guy at heart - give me those guitars that someone would describe as "angular," and I'm sold. My all-time favorite band is Los Campesinos!, but some other faves include Modest Mouse, The Hold Steady, and Oso Oso. Recent discoveries: The Tubs (fantastic jangle-pop), Lambrini Girls (queer female riot-starters from Brighton, England), and Perennial (caustic, jittery punk).
What are your hobbies? I'm a pop-culture nerd, so I spend a lot of time at the movies and listening to podcasts. I've also been enjoying running (of course), reading (mostly fiction or graphic novels/comics), and checking out new restaurants.
Favorite sports team? I went to UCLA - go Bruins!
Favorite place to eat in Sawtelle? Spoon and Pork was a personal fave, but their Sawtelle location recently turned into a takeout-only spot. I'm also a Tatsu loyalist - the Bold Ramen is still the best ramen I've ever tasted. Oh, and Nong La's chicken pho is great!
What's a hidden gem in LA you think more people should know about? There are so many great repertory movie theaters in LA - the New Beverly, the Aero, Vidiots, the Vista - and they curate great films at affordable prices, often with Q&As or other unique experiences. The Academy Museum also hosts screenings in their two incredible theaters - if you like movies, it's worth seeking out!
What pets do you have? I don't have any pets, but I want to be friends with everyone's dog
Got anything you want to promote? My friend Frances has an online zine called Power of the Playlist (https://poweroftheplaylist.com/ ), which is currently accepting submissions for their annual "Rex Manning Day" issue, in honor of the fictional holiday in the film Empire Records. If you, too, wished that you worked at a record store in the '90s so you could wear a flannel, listen to the Gin Blossoms, and call everyone a poser for "selling out," you should sign up!
What's your instagram? I gave up Instagram, but you can find me at @alexpieros on Letterboxd
